Christmas is rapidly approaching! We have compiled a list of some of our favorite toys and games for children of all ages, including children who have speech\/language disorders!\u00a0 Here are just a few of our favorites toys and some ideas for using them to promote language development!<\/p>\n

  1. \u00a0Farm toys and animals are great for working on so many things!\u00a0 Here is a list of just a few great ways to model and promote good language skills while playing with these toys.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    -imitation of animal sounds<\/p>\n

    -labeling animal names<\/p>\n

    -receptively and expressively labeling concept words – in, on, under, next to etc…<\/p>\n

    -teaching actions sounds (eat, sleep, jump, climb, etc..)<\/p>\n

    -pretend play<\/p>\n

    2.\u00a0 Car and truck toys<\/p>\n

    So many kids are highly motivated by cars and trucks, which makes them great toys for promoting language.<\/p>\n

    -environmental sound imitation (beep beep, vroom, crash!)<\/p>\n

    -labeling colors of cars<\/p>\n

    -simple fill-in phrases “ready, set, go!”, “on your mark, get set, go!”<\/p>\n

    -following simple directions<\/p>\n

    3.\u00a0 Mr. Potato Head<\/p>\n

    Mr. Potato Head provides hours of fun for kids!<\/p>\n

    -labeling body parts<\/p>\n

    -identifying colors<\/p>\n

    -following directions<\/p>\n

    -pretend play<\/p>\n

    4.\u00a0 Blocks<\/p>\n

    Blocks are great for kids of all ages!<\/p>\n

    -pretend play<\/p>\n

    -using spatial concept words (on, under, next to, etc…)<\/p>\n

    -modeling early developing words (up, go, more,..)<\/p>\n

    -requesting by color<\/p>\n

    -turn taking while building<\/p>\n

    5.\u00a0 Board Games<\/p>\n

    Board games are an awesome way to engage and work on language with a child!\u00a0 If a child has specific language or speech targets, you can work on them in between turns and use the game as a motivator.\u00a0 Some of our favorites include: Sneaky Snacky Squirrel, Candyland, Pop the Pig and Zingo.<\/p>\n

    Other ways games are great include:<\/p>\n

    -turn taking<\/p>\n

    -color identification<\/p>\n

    -working on waiting<\/p>\n

    -counting\/keeping score<\/p>\n

    -sportsmanship<\/p>\n
